Haribodhini Ekadashi is the largest and most important Ekadashi of the twenty-four Ekadashis of the year. Hence it is also called Big Ekadashi. In Hinduism, Ekadashi is considered as a festival to worship Lord Vishnu. It is mentioned in the Puranas that Lord Vishnu, who slept in the ocean of sagar on the day of Ashadh Shukla Ekadashi, wakes up today. This is why it is believed that this day is called Haribodhini Ekadashi. The Bhavishyottara Purana mentions that worship of Lord Vishnu performed today is more fruitful than other Ekadashis. On Haribodhani, the big Ekadashi festival, Hindus observe the brat by worshiping Lord Narayan. During this period, fairs are held at Barakhshetra, a famous pilgrimage site in Nepal.
