According to one story, it is said that Ashwatthama was very angry after the death of his father in the battle of Mahabharata. A sense of revenge was burning in his heart. Due to this he entered the camp of Pandavas.

Five people were sleeping inside the camp. Ashwatthama killed him mistaking him for a Pandava. They were all five children of Draupadi. Then Arjuna captured him and took away his divine gem. Ashwatthama destroyed Abhimanyu’s wife Uttara’s unborn child in revenge.

In this way, Lord Krishna gave the fruit of all his virtues to Uttara’s unborn child and brought him back to life in her womb. Because the child died in the womb and came back to life, that child was named Jivitputrika. Since then Jitiya vrat was started for long life of children and good fortune.

Mythology of Jitiya Vrat;

Gandharvaraja Jimutavahana was a very religious and ascetic man. In his youth, he left Rajpat and went to serve his father in the forest. One day while visiting he met Nagamata, when Jimutavahana asked the reason for her lamentation, he told that the Naga clan is very troubled by Garuda, to protect the clan, the clan has made an agreement with Garuda that they will eat a snake every day. He will take it and in return he will not hunt our group.

In this process today his son has to go in front of Garuda. After listening to Nagamata’s whole story, Jimutavahan promised her that he would not let anything happen to his son and instead of wrapping him in a cloth, he would lie down in front of Garuda on the rock from where Garuda takes his food and he did so. Garuda pressed Jimutavahana in his claws and flew towards the mountain.

When Garuda saw that the place where the snake was screaming and crying was quiet as usual, he removed the cloth and found Jimutavahana. Jimutvahan told the whole story to Garuda, after which he left Jimutvahan and promised not to eat snakes.
